Rotary Club Finds New Fund Raiser
The Estherville
Rotary club recently sponsored a charity fund-raising
auction which garnered more than $5000 for our club. We were
searching for a way to replenish our treasury and decided to
give this a try.
We collected items from businesses and made a general request
to our community for donations-and boy, did we get donations.
Our goal was to cover our expenses and hopefully clear $1500-$2000.
We were so surprised and pleased to pass that amount before we
were halfway through all the auction items.
We plan to repeat this fund-raiser next year with hopefully
even better results. We've already ear-marked much of the cash
to several different needy groups in our community and surrounding
communities. And we hope to contribute to the 'Clean Water' campaign
Rotary is involved with now.

CENTRAL GARDENS’ LATEST
SCULPTURE
The latest sculpture addition to Central Gardens of North Iowa
is a beautifully unique sundial created in honor of Bill Killpack,
known as “Mr. Rotary”. The butterfly designed sundial
was appropriately placed in the Butterfly Garden named by Roger
and Gail Harringa.
Sundials served as ancient timepieces. This particular sundial
pattern was created by H. Milton Duesenberg from a design he
and Bruce Vrchota had made for a large metal and rock sculpture
located in northeast Clear Lake. Duesenberg explained that what
is important to a sundial is the sloping edge on top called a
gnomon. “The edge has to be straight and the base has to
be level and horizontal,” he said. “The angle is
based on the latitude of Clear Lake, 43 degrees 9 minutes, which
makes the gnomon parallel to the pole of the earth and the time
is based on Central Standard Time,” Duesenberg described.
Laurence Fredriksen of Fredriksen Welding and Mike Connor did
the execution of the butterfly design in wrought iron with J.B.
Barnhouse of Country Stone Masons, carving the Iowa limestone
base. Julie and Bruce Steinberg of North Iowa Collision donated
the refinish painting.
The sundial was made possible by major donations from Mason
City Sunrise Rotary Club, Mason City Noon Rotary Club and from
individual Rotary members, former employers and friends of Bill
Killpack. Killpack was a past President of the Mason City Noon
Rotary and District Governor of Rotary District 5970 (1989-90).
He had over thirty years of perfect attendance at Rotary. He
loved Central Gardens of North Iowa so much that he served on
the fundraising committee up until the time of his death. Area
Rotary Clubs have helped in creating many of the unique features
in Central Gardens, which will be enjoyed for generations to
come.

Area Rotary Clubs Combine Dedicate Bridges at Central
Gardens
A unique project at Central Gardens of North Iowa
in Clear Lake brought together Rotarians from three local clubs
and the Rotary
District 5970. Members from the Clear Lake Rotary Club, Mason
City Noon Rotary Club, and the River City Sunrise Rotary Club
combined efforts to secure a district rotary grant to provide
for the garden’s bridges, connecting pathways and Ornamental
Grass Garden.
During the recent dedication ceremony held at Central Gardens,
Pat Reed (Past District Governor and District Rotary Grant Committee
Chair) shared his delight with public garden, saying the committee
was impressed with the planning, documentation and execution
demonstrated by the Central Gardens’ project. Reed went
on to say, “By working together, the three Rotary Clubs
were able to capture the attention of the District Rotary Grant
Committee.”
Designed by Bob Broshar (a retired architect, Rotarian and Central
Gardens Board Member), each of the three bridge’s railings
is unique—depicting reeds, natural grasses and waves. Member
of the three clubs also planted the Ornamental Grass Gardens
which includes native grasses. The grant provided for the brick
walkways between the three bridges. The bridges and walkway represent
regional cooperation in creating beauty and educational opportunities
for North Iowa.
Over 150 were in attendance as the Rotary celebrated
the dedication and ribbon cutting with a chicken barbeque picnic
in Central
Gardens.
Central Gardens of North Iowa is a 2.75 acre public garden with
free admission and open daily from dawn to dusk. Central Gardens
is located at 800 Second Avenue North in Clear Lake.

Last Thursday the Webster City Rotary club held
a workday. It is the second of 5 committed years to Kids Against
Hunger for financial and work support. Mainly kids and grandkids
of Rotarians help fill bags full of food for hungry families
in Africa. 7 Rotarians and 9 kids chipped in. The kids really
enjoy the hands on during the work and the great sense of accomplishment
after the work is finished. We treat the kids to “dilly
bars” after the work is done as small token of appreciation.
www.KidsAgainstHunger.org has lots of information about the program.
We filled 21 boxes each with 36 bags for food. Each bag contains
6 meals. So we packaged up over 4500 meals to be shipped to Tanzania,
Africa. Each meal cost about $0.23 to make, but the most expensive
part of the project is the shipping of boxes. The Rotarians pictured
in the attachment are: (L to R) Tim Anderson and Gregg Olsen.
Have a good weekend everybody!
