Mason City Noon Rotary Club

 

• 1933-Sponsored “Feed, Swim and Game” program for the boys whose parents are on welfare
• 1940-Operated a boy’s camp in Clear Lake.
• 1944-100% attendance day Celebrated.
• 1946-Sponsored vocational guidance event for high school boys. Raised $15,000 for scout camp. Provided 20 YMCA memberships for underprivileged boys and 15 YWCA memberships for girls.
• 1948-Planned health survey of the county. International service involved sending REVISTA ROTARIA to South American clubs.
• 1950-Studen Loan fund-two scholarships awarded. Assisted the Community Chest drive and the Good Samaritan Hospital drive.
• 1953-Club set up county-wide vocational guidance service.
• 1954-Instigated baseball games between Mason City and Waterloo police men to raise money for equipment at therapeutic center for crippled children. Raised $1500.
• 1957-$1550 raised for the Crippled Children’s Society. Awarded two complete scholarships to the Mason City Junior College for deserving students. Helped establish the Mental Health Clinic.
• 1959-$2400 netted for Crippled Children Society. Purchased a Volkswagon to transport handicapped children to the Hoover treatment Center. The rotary Cannonball Steam Locomotive #457 was presented to the City of Mason City donated by American Crystal Sugar.
• 1960-63-Proceeds from baseball games contributed to crippled Children’s Society each year. Gave YMCA and YWCA memberships to deserving students.
• 1965-Club sponsored the first Interact Club in the district. Indicated plans to bring in the University of Iowa GIZZ KIDS wheelchair basketball tea, to raise money for Easter Seal Treatment Center.
• 1968-Scholarships to Junior College and sponsorship of Boy/Girl Scout troops and Cub Pack.
• 1971-Annual Radio Auction netted funds to contribute to the Handicapped Village in Clear Lake and to the YMCA to help pay for a needed bus.
• 1974-Donated $1500 to Capital funds drive of YMCA.
• 1978-Thor Jensen elected District Governor. Supported district’s Self Help Tractors to Honduras project. Responded to appeal from Lippa, Phillippines for school books for rural area schools.
• 1979-Concentrated funds raised by radio auction and other events into highly successful tree planting project both in town and at the fairgrounds working side by side with 4-H kids. Plans continue the tree planting project in future years were made.
• 1980-82- Radio auction continues to be major fund raiser with approximately $4,000 raised annually. Half the proceeds to be used for planting trees lost to Dutch Elm disease throughout the city.
• 1983-Contributed $1,230 to the WCS project, Self Help to Pakistan
• 1984-Contribution of $2,950 for the Alexandria Egypt hospital program, as part of the Self Help program.
• 1985-Raised over $15,000 from its Railroad days and planted over 1,000 trees in the community.
• 1986-Major contributor to numerous community projects such as Francis Lauer Youth home; Hospice of Cerro Gordo; NI Recreation Center; High School Band Uniforms. Provided trees and shrubs for YMCA and John Adams Middle School, club members doing the planting.
• 1987-Women were admitted to Rotary. Club contributed $1,500 to Comprehensive Systems Group home and the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. Club set goal of $25,000 for Polio Plus with any monies over that goal to be matched by the Kinney-Lindstrom Foundation up to $5,000.
• 1988-William Killpack elected to District Governor. Raised in excess of $31,000 for Polio Plus. After 24 years, the annual radio auction still continues to be a huge success raising over $6,000 this last year.
• 1990-$10,000 from radio auction used to purchase bus trip home for 1133 Troops before going to the Middle East; Helped finance Mason City High Chorus trip to Washington DC, purchased trees for Georgia Hanford Park and wall near Gazebo at East Park; Built Shelter and planted wild flowers along trolley trail to Clear Lake.
• 1992-New signs were installed at all four entrances to town. Permanent plantings at the shelter house on the bike trail-$300.00. The club gave $100 to the Christmas Cheer Fund. $100 was given to the Bancroft Rotary Club. $125 was paid to sponsor a boy at Boys State. $200 given for ducks at the conference.
• Radio Auction
• 1993- $6,000 was distributed from the Rotary Radio Auction (plantings by the Meredith Willson footbridge, North Iowa Fairgrounds, Washington Elementary School, North Iowa Girl Scouts, KCMR, The Charles MacNider Museum, Mason City/Clear Lake Electric Railway, Cooperative Extension, Newman Catholic School System, North Iowa Community Action Organization Head Start Program and Hospice.
• 1994-Started yearly scholarships given to a Newman and a Mason City High School student at $300 each. $5,000 distributed from the Rotary Radio Auction (OK House, NIACC for the R Wallace Memorial Garden,River City Trees, Community Kitchen, Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, Mason City Parks and Recreation, Mason City High School Choir Trip, Autumn Park Apartments and the Cooperative Extension for the 4H Youth Conference.
• 1995-$6,000 distributed from the Rotary Radio Auction. $148 was contributed to “Miracles from a Wheelchair”-part of an International Service project. Started the Merdith Willson medallion which will be given yearly to a deserving individual selected by a committee. This award will be given on Band Festival weekend. The cost will be $350.00.

• 1997-$6,450 distributed from the Rotary Radio Auction (DOT and CASA
• 1998-$7,917 distributed from the Rotary Radio Auction (Francis Lauer, North Iowa Vocational Center, Prairie Playground, and the Community Theatre) $1,000 was given to Project Amigo to build one unit. A number of Rotarians paid $50 to sponsor a child. A grant was written to the Extreme Sports Park.
• 1999-Five Rotarians went to Mexico to help with Project Amigo.
• 2000-$700 was sent to Project Amigo. Dr. Darrell Fisher started working on the “Limbs for Life” project. $6,400 was spent on tree planting for the Northeast and Southeast corner of Highway 65. $650 was given to Stories 2000. Auction proceeds were distributed to Francis Lauer Youth Services, Hospice, North Iowa Red Cross, Child Abuse Prevention Council and Lutheran Social Services.
• 2001- The “Limbs for Life” program continued. $250 given to the duck race at the District Conference.
• 2002-$12,050 distributed from the Rotary Radio Auction (4/$300 scholarships, $350/Meridith Willson Medallion, $2,000/Mason City Aquatic Center, $8,500/Central Gardens Project.
