ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

Harrison E. Cass, Jr., Chairman

District 5970

Education Awards Sub-committee

TO:     Prospective Applicants for 2012-2013 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships

FROM:    Rotary District 5970 Scholarship Committee

SUBJECT: Instructions for Ambassadorial Scholarship Application

DATE: February 2011

The following information is intended to assist you in becoming an applicant for a Rotary Scholarship.  Please follow all steps on the enclosed checklist.

To become a candidate for a Rotary scholarship for advanced undergraduate or graduate study in another country, a person (a) must be sponsored by a local Rotary club in his/her home town or by a local club in the community in which he/she attends college or is employed, (b) must be able to read, write, and speak the language of the country to which he/she hopes to be assigned, and (c) must be nominated for the scholarship by the Education Awards Committee of the Rotary district in which the sponsoring Rotary club is located.

A prospective candidate should read the information available on the Rotary.org web pages under the Student and Youth category.  See web addresses on Application Checklist handout.  Rotary District 5970 sponsors ONLY the "Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship."

The web pages contain the instructions for completing the application process.  To learn about Rotary, see Worldwide Web address:  http://www.rotary.org.  The scholarship specific web page address is:

http://www.rotary.org/en/StudentsAndYouth/EducationalPrograms/AmbassadorialScholarships/Pages/Howtoapply.aspx

The "instructions to applicants" in the application form "scholarship application" must be followed meticulously.  If your institutional choices are in countries in which the language is not English, a "language ability" form must be completed by a teacher of the language of each of those countries.  If the language of your first-preference study country is French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish, you must submit one copy of the "scholarship application" and of the sheets to be attached to it in the language of that country.  Please photo duplicate the "scholarship application" and "language ability" sections if you need additional copies of them.

An applicant for an advanced undergraduate or graduate scholarship should request not later than mid-April that two collegiate academic instructors complete "educator's recommendation" forms and mail them directly to the sponsoring Rotary club before July 22, 2011.  Similarly, an applicant should arrange for official transcripts of his/her academic record at all colleges attended, including 2011 spring semester grades, to be sent to the sponsoring club before the July 22 deadline.  Note that the last date for submitting your completed application materials to the local club whose sponsorship you are seeking is July 22.

The District 5970 selection committee will screen applications submitted by the District's Rotary Clubs and invite a subset of applicants for interviews on Saturday, August 20, 2011 on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.  The interview on that date is a "must."

Contact your local Rotary club president or one of the committee members if you have questions.

GOOD LUCK!
