DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Board of Medicine is launching a public education program
intended to help physicians and the public better understand the unique role it plays in Iowa’s
health care system and the resources it offers to ensure quality health care in the state.
Â
The program consists of a slide presentation and a question-and-answer session on physician
licensing and discipline, and the resources the Board offers to the public – everything from
helping a health consumer choose a physician to addressing complaints about medical care. The
program targets non-medical groups as well as medical students, residents, hospital and clinic
staffs, physician groups and medical societies.
Â
Initially, the Board’s executive director, Mark Bowden, will be available for public
presentations. It is expected that other members of the agency’s administrative staff as well as
members of the Board will make presentations, too, depending upon public interest.
“State medical boards play an essential role in the health care system, protecting the public from
the unprofessional, improper, unlawful, fraudulent or incompetent practice of medicine,” said
Board Chairperson Siroos Shirazi, M.D. “The Board is committed to fulfilling this mission for
the people of Iowa and we believe this outreach will help us succeed in that effort.”
Â
The 10-member Board is composed of seven physicians and three members of the public
appointed by the Governor. The Board employs an administrative staff including an executive
director, legal director, medical director, investigators, and licensing staff.
Â
Arrangements for presentations should be made at least three weeks prior t
o the event. Contact:
